The Tema West Municipal Assembly on Monday 12th of February 2024 inaugurated the newly elected assembly members and government appointees for their four-years tenure to promote local government and community development.

In all seventeen (17) out of eleven (11) elected assembly members and six (6) government appointees were sworn in.

Her Worship Ms. Mabel Naa Lamiley Aheley the Magistrate of Baatsona District Court administered the oath of secrecy and allegiance oath to the members.

President Akufo-Addo in a speech read on his behalf by the Vice Chairman, Public Service Commission Dr. Stella Agyenim-Boateng, emphasized on the selfless role Assembly members had to pay in ensuring accountable stewardship and articulating the needs of their electorates and implementing government programmes.

She called on the assembly members to build positive working relationships with their colleagues, Chief Executive, Members of Parliament, staff of the Assembly, and the people they represent.

“You should also establish strong partnerships and collaborate with the local structures particularly, the urban, town, zonal and area council, the unit committees and traditional authorities as well as other identifiable groups to facilitate the work of the District Assembly.

As first step, the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development, through the OHLGS, will in the next few weeks organize your orientation and training to enable you to appreciate the expected roles and responsibilities", she added.

Dr. Stella Agyenim-Boateng, stressed the importance of good governance and active citizen participation in the development process and encouraged the members to create platforms for citizen engagement, such as town hall meetings and community durbar, as well as deploy digitalized tools to enhance the relationship between duty bearers and citizens.

She later congratulated all elected assembly members and highlighted the constitutional mandate to promote decentralization and citizen participation in governance, emphasizing the critical role of assemblies in bringing government to the people.

On her part, the Municipal Chief Executive of the Tema West Municipal Assembly, Hon Anna Naa Adukwei Addo, called on the newly Assembly Members to help improve sanitation situation in the Municipality.

She said, the Assembly Members must collaborate with the environmental health unit of the assembly to rid the Municipality of filth and other health related problems associated with unsanitary condition.

Hon. MCE therefore urged the assembly members to help educate the residents on the need to pay their tools and fees, especially the property rate to facilitate development within the Municipality.

Hon Anna Naa Adukwei Addo later hinted that, the assemblies on such taxes to generate the needed revenue to fund developmental projects in the Municipality.
