REPORT ON THE 69TH INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION.

The Tema West Municipal Assembly, on Friday, 6th March 2026, joined several Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the country in commemorating Ghana’s 69th Independence Day Celebration. The event formed part of the nationwide activities held to mark Ghana’s independence and celebrate the country’s democratic growth and national unity..

The celebration took place at the Mexico School’s Astroturf Park at Community Two (2) under the theme, “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope.” The occasion brought together students, teachers, security personnel, traditional leaders and members of the general public to honour the nation’s history and achievements..

Addressing the gathering, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Ludwig Teye Totimeh, paid tribute to Ghana’s forebearers who fought tirelessly for the country’s independence. He emphasized the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by the nation’s heroes and encouraged citizens to continue upholding the values of patriotism, discipline and unity.

Touching on the theme for the celebration, Hon. Totimeh explained that “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope” highlights the need for citizens to work together towards national development while restoring confidence and hope among the people. He further noted that Independence Day provides an opportunity for Ghanaians to reflect on the country’s journey and renew their commitment towards nation-building..

The Municipal Chief Executive also stated that the Assembly is working assiduously to improve healthcare delivery, road infrastructure and educational facilities within the Municipality. He added that the Assembly has prioritized the modernization of educational infrastructure to meet the growing demand for quality teaching and learning facilities for students and teachers.

A total of fourteen (14) schools, comprising Basic, Junior High and Senior High Schools, participated in this year’s celebration with a total contingent of 365 students. The participating schools displayed discipline, confidence and patriotism during the march past competition. At the end of the competition, Salvation Army Basic School, Adjei-Kojo, emerged winners in the Basic Schools category.

The celebration was attended by the Member of Parliament for the Tema West Constituency, Security Personnel, Traditional Leaders, Heads of Departments, Teachers, Pupils and members of the general public. During the event, Master Yaw Quainoo, a past student of Prince of Peace Presbyterian School, Community 5, was adjudged the Best Male Student, while Jefain Lebene Amenuvor emerged as the Best Female Student among the Private Schools in the Municipality. Faruza Musah from the Tetteh Ocloo State School for the Deaf was presented with the Presidential Award in recognition of her outstanding achievement, while Emmanuella Kyei Ahenkorah emerged as the Best Female Student among the Public Senior High Schools in the Municipality
