TEMA WEST MUNICIPAL CHIEF EXECUTIVE THREE DAYS INSPECTS ROADS SAFETY INTERVENTION FACILITIES WITHIN THE MUNICIPALITY

The Tema West Municipal Assembly, led by Municipal Chief Executive Hon. Ludwig Teye Totimeh together with the Greater Accra Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Authority Mr. Joshua Quist and Municipal Roads Engeer have conducted a three day’s joint roads inspection tour to some key road’s safety infrastructure constructed by the Assembly within the Municipality.

The inspection which was initiated by Hon. Ludwig Teye Totimeh, started on Tuesday, 19th May and ended on the Thursday 21st May 2026 took officials through accident prone residential zones including Sakumono, Kotobabi, Baatsona and Adjei-Kojo Global Down, to assess localised safety measures following persistent complaints from residents regarding speeding motorist on inner community roads.

Hon. Ludwig Teye Totimeh, stated that the alarming statistics required the assembly to review its strategy and implement aggressive traffic calming measures for 2025/2026 fiscal years to minimize crashes. He noted that the assembly frequently received complaints about overspending, adding that situation sometimes becomes very critical resulting in fatal crashes. “Regarding the recommendation and technical assessments from the Municipal Roads Engineer, the Assembly had commenced the phased installation of speed humps, rumble strips and zebra crossing across all the electoral areas to ensure total safety in the Municipality” he stated. Hon. MCE therefore urged motorists to respect road signs and exercise patience, warning that speeding over newly installed rumble strips defeated public investments and called on drivers to exercise maximum caution in school zones and transport terminals where pedestrians traffic was dense.

Speaking during the tour the Greater Accra Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Authority Mr. Joshua Quist hinted that, nationwide pedestrians knockdown deaths rose steadily from 59 in 2024 to 704 in 2025 and the situation has further deteriorated in 2026, with 666 pedestrians knockdown and 181 deaths recorded within the first four months of the year alone, out of which the Greater Accra Region accounted for 43 fatalities.

Mr. Joshua Quist later hinted that 85 to 90 percent of roads crashes were linked to human error which included speeding, wrongful overtaking and driving under the influence of illicit substances like tramadol and rohypnol. He therefore cautions drivers about the need to protect themselves and other road users, reminding them that motorists become pedestrians the moment they park their vehicles, and urged drivers to exercise patiently and give way to people crossing the road.

The Greater Accra Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Authority later commended the Assembly for taking proactive independent steps to roll out localised engineering intervention ahead of the finalization of the District Safety committee’s farmwork, emphasising that physical infrastructure played a crucial role in mitigating behavioral risks on the roads.

The delegation which want for the tour included Mr. Emmanuel Worder, the Tema West Municipal Roads Engineer, Ms. Charlotte Esi Dadzi, the NRSA Planning Manager for the Greater Accra Region and some official from the Tema West Municipal Assembly.
