TEMA WEST MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY PLANTS 2000 SEEDLINGS TO MARK 2023 GREEN GHANA DAY.
The Tema West Municipal Assembly led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Hon. Anna Naa Adukwei Addo in collaboration with the Forestry Commission and some Heads of department on Friday 9th June 2023 planted trees within the Municipality, to embark on the 2023 Green Ghana Initiative to recover the Municipality’s lost vegetation.
The Green Ghana Day was instituted by the government in 2021 through the Ministry of lands, Forestry and Natural Resources, and the Forestry Commission, as part of an aggressive national afforestation programme to restore the lost forest cover of the country and contribute to the global effort to mitigate climate change. Speaking at the commemoration of the 2023 World Environmental Day under the theme “Our Forests, Our Health”, Hon. Anna Naa Adukwei Addo stated that, the Assembly is excepted to plant 2,000 seedlings within the Municipality especially the lagoon area.
In Tema West, the Municipal executive, accompanied by some senior officers of the Assembly, planted trees around the main roads of the municipality, with other activities taking place in some schools. She later hinted that; the seedlings are expected to be planted within the Municipality as part of a deliberate effort to preserve the Sakumono Lagoon.
Hon. MCE Later called on the Assembly Members, Civil Society organizations, Environmentalist, Chiefs, students and all major stakeholders to collaborate with the assembly in order to limit human activities that affect the environment and act immediately to save it. “I therefore call on you to continue to play a vital role in maintaining biodiversity; conservation of our natural environment and restoring degraded lands in the Municipality.
Mrs. Patience Alloh, the Municipal Director of Agriculture, who was also present in a remark mentioned that, planting of trees promotes better environment for all and cleaner air to breath and therefore stressed the need for everyone regardless of the person’s affiliation to take this initiative seriously to preserve the environment by planting trees in their various places.
the Municipal Director of Agriculture hinted that, the World Environmental Day is celebrated annually to reiterate the importance of nature and environment and also as a reminder that nature should not be taken for granted and must be given the needed respect for its value.
