The Tema west municipal assembly in collaboration with the Ghana health service and Ghana AID’s commission on Monday 1st December, 2025 observed the World AIDs Day.

Speaking on the theme; “Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the HIV Response”, the Chief Executive, Hon. Ludwig Teye Totimeh stated that “it is the responsibility of the Assembly to create Awareness on the spread of the HIV AIDS Virus and its preventive measures

He later hinted that, over the past decades, the world has made remarkable progress in the fight against HIV and AIDS, yet, the journey has not been without disruption. These disruptions have tested our system and resilience, reminding us that the HIV Response must continuously evolve if we are to truly end AIDs.

Hon. Totimeh, further stated that, HIV is not a moral failing, but it is a medical condition and people living with HIV deserve dignity, respect and love. He therefore edged families, workplace, school, religious bodies and institutions to foster environment that uplift rather than isolate.

He threw more light on the fact that the youth in Ghana especially, Tema West, remain the center of the HIV Response. Saying “through Education, Mentorship and Empowerment programmes will equip the youth with accurate information and ensure they are protected from misinformation and risky behaviors

Miss Amese Zoiku, HIV Coordinator at the Health Directorate, in her remarks noted that humans sometimes struggle with self control, which can lead to engaging in sexual activity without considering the potential impact on their health

She explained that the introduction of prophylaxis available in two forms, pre exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) has significantly contributed to reducing the spread of the virus.

Miss Zoiku further emphasized that research has shown these medicines are not 100% effective. Therefore, the most reliable way to prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS remains practicing safe sex or choosing abstinence.
